Margot Elena is a little bit of an enigma. Unlike some brand founders who revel in the spotlight, she prefers to be behind-the-scenes actually doing the creating. You may not even be that familiar with her name, but you definitely would be familiar with her smells, as she’s the olfactory genius behind some of our best-selling scents and lush bath products. Think: Tokyo Milk, Lollia, Infinite She and Library of Flowers.
The thing about Margot Elena is that she creates worlds, not brands. The formulations, the feelings, the stories and the designs are all so unique to each of the worlds, they’re almost impossible to imitate — and that is by design. They’re forever pieces made to enhance your life, not just dress it.
Margot herself was born into a creative world — her mother was an artist, her father a classically trained musician and in the small town she grew up in in Alberta, Canada, it wasn’t long before she was crafting jewellery to sell to classmates. She had barely graduated University (she studied Philosophy) when she opened her first store in Kansas, at age 22. Naturally, it was filled with bath and beauty products — handmade soaps and hand-blended scents — which in little more than three years grew to her distributing her first national brand throughout the USA. She was a pioneer in the reimagined bath-and-beauty space, which at the time was not considered, or aesthetic, and almost exclusively smelled of florals. Rejecting this tired notion, she brought beauty to space, delighting all the senses with the smells and design, but also creating a whimsical kind of escapism — which is exactly what you want in your downtime.
Now, her worlds exist in bricks and mortar in Denver, Colorado, and her brands are found in big name stores in the USA like Antrhopologie and across the rest of the world. Not content with beauty empire, Margot Elena also studied to be a certified health coach, and is notorious in her company for leading with heart and wellbeing at the centre — she calls it a “love based and heart-centred” approach. Seeking the elusive “balance” she brought the things she values the most to both her team and her workspace, which meant meditation, yoga, smoothies and life coaching. The professional advice she’s been quoted giving to young entrepreneurs sums up her approach beautifully: “As early as you can, and you probably will have to change and it will evolve as you evaluate, but truly come to that place of self-awareness to know: What do you want? What do you value? And who you are and live your life as integrated as you possibly can. And that may mean making some really weird decisions.”
Weird decisions, evidently, are the ones that have paid off for her, with each launch carving out its own niche, and slew of devoted fans, who return time and time again to lose themselves in her brand libraries. She really has created her own world.
