Rose is not a new skincare ingredient - it’s been used in lotions, creams and fragrances for centuries now. But, actually it does a lot more than make your face cream smell nice (though it definitely does that too!). Here, we explain the skin benefits of Damascus Rose, and why this ingredient is one of our favourites.
A rose by any other name…
But first, let's talk about the rose. The official title of the Damscus Rose is Rosa Damascena, but is also commonly referred to as the Damask Rose or Rose of Castile. Native to Europe and the Middle East, it’s most famously grown in Bulgaria and has a rich, potent scent. The essential oil extracted from the flowers is what is most commonly used in skincare products, as it contains the most skin-enhancing benefits.
The benefits of rose oil
Each type of rose used in skincare has a slightly different benefit, however generally you’ll find the likes of Damascus rose in anti-ageing skincare and those that target dry and sensitive skin types. This is because rose oil has amazing moisturising properties and is known to soothe and calm the skin. In addition, studies have shown that it also carries antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants - everything you want in your everyday skincare.
Rose water and the skin
While rose oil is made from rose petals via distillation or extraction, rose water is created by soaking or “steeping” the petals in water, to make a sort of infused water. Rose hydrosols, however, are created by a complex process of distillation that capture some of the essential oil goodness of the flower and some therapeutic benefits like antibacterial properties. It’s for this reason you often see rose water and hydrosols pop up in face mists, spritzes and toners - as it will help to balance the skin.
So, there you have it. Roses aren’t just a prop for The Bachelorette contestants. The Damascus rose, especially, has many amazing skin benefits, and as a bonus they all smell incredible too. If your skin is on the dry side, or you’re looking for a little pick-me-up, try looking for a product with rose oil or rose hydrosol in your next beauty shop.
